Is my child allergic? Spotting the signs

I had a gut feeling someone wasn’t right and spent many restless nights dangerously googling Matilda’s symptoms. I am by no means a doctor and this page is just to serve as a guide. If you have any concerns about your child being allergic to cows milk, please seek medical advice by contacting your Health Visitor or GP.
Here are some of the most common signs of a cows milk allergy you can look out for:
  • Stomach pain
  • Bad reflux and
  • Excessive crying in babies
  • Diarrhea
  • Wheezing
  • Rash

One thing I was also debating in the early days of trying to work out what was causing Matilda’s symptoms was is it just an intolerance or is it an allergy. How could I tell the difference?

Below is a table which divides the symptoms into what indicates an allergy and what indicates a lactose intolerance to help distinguish between intolerance versus allergy. You can read more about this on my blog post Intolerance vs Allergy.

Cow’s milk allergy
Lactose intolerance

 vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation
constant crying and colic in babies
 swelling of lips or eyelids
 difficulty breathing
  rash
  anaphylactic shock

uncomfortable and bad gas
diarrhoea
stomach cramps
bloating
nausea

severe colic in babies
